Environmental Risks
The toxicity of BHA and BHT cause harm to the environment and wildlife, particularly aquatic species. Fish are greatly affected by these chemical as it causes injuries and even fatality. Both chemicals then bioaccumulate within the fish and then are transferred into predators, including humans, when eaten. Mollusca are a more specific group of animals that are affected because they rely heavily on oxidation reactions to function, which BHA and BHT inhibit. This either leads to behavior modifications or to death. Amphibians are affected differently as they do not die from these chemicals however; it alters their genetic makeup, which leads to mutations.
